About the Project

The Garden on Gearing is a small community garden in the neighborhood of Beltzhoover, next door  to the Beltzhoover Neighborhood Council office. Gordon envisions that in the coming years the garden will be a place of inter-generational education centered around food. Activities will be held at the site next season for people of all ages to learn growing techniques, cooking skills and fruit tree tending.

In the future, a large mural at the site will be designed by a local artist and painted by neighborhood youth.

A strong partnership with Voices Against Violence, Beltzhoover Neighborhood Council, as well as other community-based organizations have been and will be a great asset for the Garden on Gearing.

“When you grow stuff and you have kids involved, they’re more likely to eat the carrot that they’ve grown than a store-bought one. And I just want that. There’s a way to bring people together.”

Gordon's plan for this space.

The site contained only a few trees before Gordon's project.

Gordon and volunteers prepare soil for planting.

6 raised beds were built on the site and will provide free, nutritious treats to neighborhood kids.

A Voices Against Violence participant, Amir, uses extreme concentration to measure out berry trellises.
